Supplemental Instruction

SI is not offered during the summer term.

SI will resume in the fall semester. Promotions for the program will occur during the firstweek of classes, and SI sessions will begin Sunday, August 26th. Visit our schedule of SI sessions to see which courses will have SI. Days, times, and locations for SI sessions will be posted by Friday, August 24th.

What is SI?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognized academic support program offering free, regularly scheduled study sessions for traditionally difficult courses. SI sessions are facilitated by SI Leaders, who are undergraduate students who have previously taken the course and demonstrated academic competency in the subject area. Each SI Leader faciliates at least three 50-minute sessions per week using collaborative learning methods. Attend once or attend every session...the choice is up to you, but our data suggests that the more you attend, the higher your final grade will be in the course.
We recommend attending SI at least once per week.

Why SI?

SI is a free, voluntary opportunity for all students enrolled in a course. Students who participate in SI will:

  • Learn how-to-learn while learning what-to-learn.
  • Work collaboratively with peer students in a facilitated environment.
  • Receive support from a trained, educated SI Leader.

SI Leaders

The SI Leader staff consists of current ISU students who have previously enrolled in courses they lead, or have completed related coursework. All Leaders are supervised by trained professional staff members in the Academic Success Center. SI Leaders facilitate and encourage group learning of course material, rather than acting as authority figures who lecture to participants.
